The Big Dipper

Installation by Joachim Eckl

2009
Neufelden

The constellation of 7 gear wheels on high pillars stands powerful in front of the entrance of the factory building. The power of connection can be experienced in this wheel-work. It makes you look up. You can feel the weight and power of these driving wheels that moved the locks of the dam in Langhalsen/Neufelden for 80 years. Down in the valley they were the key to power and energy of the river “Große Mühl”. Now, high up in the sky they radiate dignity. Looking up to them you can see how the spoked wheels become stars. The Great Dipper as constellation was the inspiration for this installation for it is also called the hand of the sky that provides orientation and points the right way to the people on earth. It guides and lets the visitor experience the links between heaven and earth while entering the building.
