The Gates by Christo & Jeanne-Claude

Joachim Eckl participated in the construction of the 7500 gates in the Central Park in New York

1st – 12th February 2004
New York

“The Gates“ is a large-scale project of the two artists Christo & Jeanne-Claude. 7500 almost five metres high steel- and aluminium gates with hanging fabrics coloured deeply orange framed the paths and streets in New York’s Central Park in February 2005 over a total length of 37 kilometres. As with all projects of the pair of artists “The Gates” focused on a change of experiencing the familiar surroundings for a limited period of time and poeticize the perception by the colour and flowing texture of the fabric using a massive and obvious artistic intervention. The time was intentionally chosen for the wintery and leafless park as well as the luckily ideal weather with sun, wind and snow provided the visual framework for this event.
Joachim Eckl was part of the 70 teams that realised this large-scale installation.
