Tate Modern WC-Water Coins

Campaign, installation and film production

March 2006
London City & Tate Modern

Joachim Eckl bought coins from homeless people on the street for the double cash value and showed them in the Tate Modern gallery as installation in the toilets. The basic notion of the work of Joachim Eckl is to focus on the use of water and money. Both, the cash flow and the flow of water are essential in everybody’s lives. “Tate Modern WC – Water Coins” shows how money and water operate in the daily life of cultivated people.

What does enrich your life more: Water, money or art?

Is money able to let your physical needs and civilised behaviour come into conflict?

Does the place, where a piece of art is shown change the quality of watching of the audience?

How often do you flush the toilet per day?

Did you know that about 150.000.000 liters of water are being used daily for flushing the toilet in London?
